The Martian Book vs Movie

Zoe: Hi everyone, hope your week has been great. I thought I would mix things up a bit seeing as we have been doing a lot of reviews, and do a movie vs book post. Today I am comparing The Martian’s book (by Andy Weir), which I read mid-January with the movie (starring Matt Damon) which I watched quite a while ago so sorry if I forget or miss anything. I thought this would be a fun way to look at both the different materials and see which one I personally liked more. (more…)

Annike’s Favourite 5 Books of 2017!

Annike: Hey guys, so similarly to last year, Zoe and I are going to do 2 separate posts that’ll go up together for our favourite books of the year. So these are our last blog posts of 2017 – which is crazy. This year I read 94 books in total. 22 of which were audiobooks (!) and the rest which I read in hard cover. This was actually the first year I started listening to books and they were great considering I have so little time to properly read. And surprisingly I only had 6 books that I have 5 stars, so either I’m getting a bit stingy or my reading year wasn’t as good as it was last year. So without further ado, let’s get onto my favourite books of 2017 and some honourable mentions at the end. (more…)

Zoe’s Favourite 5 Books of 2017!

Zoe: Hello everyone, as Annike mentioned on our previous post, like last year we are each going to put a post up of our go favourite books of the year. This year I read 43 books and unfortunately I don’t think 2017 has been a very good reading year. Although I did manage to just reach my reading goal of 40 books I didn’t love as many of them as I would have liked, only reading 5 books that I classified as 5 stars and I actually haven’t read a book over 3.5 stars in over 3 months. Despite this I have loved reading a range of books from a range of genres and although I haven’t had a great year quantity or quality wise I have read a few books I have really enjoyed. Here are my top 5 books of this year (along with some honourable mentions).

1, How I Lost You by Janet Gurtler (5 stars)

My favourite book of 2017 would have to go to How I Lost You by Janet Gurtler. I read this in May and there was just something about this book which I loved. I think what I loved most about this was its focus on the strength of friendship and the ending of this book was so perfect, so bitter sweet yet felt so right. I think this book focused a lot on finding yourself as a person not a group and I felt as I though I could connect a lot to that. This book isn’t very well-known but I loved reading it and am so happy I picked it up.

2. Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas (5 stars)

Unlike How I Lost You, this book is widely loved and Annike actually persuaded me to read it (even though she hasn’t) after a long battle of not wanting to. I didn’t think I would like this book but when I started I could not put it down and I found myself so immersed in the world. It was so full of action and I absolutely loved the main character Celaena and fell in love with the story. Sadly I have never really felt the urge to pick up the second book despite the amazing things I have heard about it. I think I feel that it won’t live up to the first or let down the series but we’ll see if I end up reading it.

  1. My Sisters Keeper by Jodi Picoult (5 stars)

This was a really long time coming. I had heard amazing things about this book for a long time and how I needed to read it but I never really picked it up because I didn’t think I would get through it. I figured it would be to scientific for me and seeing as I hate science and medicine I wouldn’t like it. I eventually gave in and decided to read it and I’m am so glad I did because it is such a lovely story with so much heart and emotion. I thought the characters, plot and writing were all stunning, loving getting to read the book from around 7 different perspectives. The ending is also something that it really powerful, both unsatisfying yet beautiful and I would highly recommend this one.

4. An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir (5 stars)

If you have read Annike’s top 5 books you will notice this came in at number 1 and she was the one who convinced me to read it. I don’t think I loved it AS much as she did but thought it was amazing and it managed to get 5 stars. I read this back in March so its a bit hard to remember now but what I do remember is the amazing world building that was done and the character development was also unbelievable. I thought this was such a well-written and established book and loved getting to delve into a world of pure adventure with a heart-wrenching ending.

5. Glass Sword by Victoria Aveyard (5 stars)

This is the second book of the book Red Queen which funnily enough featured in my 2016 top 5. This one is also difficult to remember as I read it in February and I feel like the series is all sort of blending together. Despite this I thought this book was packed with adventures, twists and turns and was constantly a roller coaster. I couldn’t put this book down and loved getting to explore all of the new-bloods and the talents they all possessed. I did get to read the Kings Cage (3rd book) which I also loved (4 stars) so am excited to read the 4th one and see how the series all wraps up.

Honourable mentions:

Always and Forever Lara Jean by Jenny Han (4.5 stars)

Cinder by Marissa Meyer (4.5 stars)

Pivot Point by Kasie West (4 stars)

So that is all for 2017! How crazy fast has this year gone? Let me know if you have read any of the books I mentioned above and your thoughts on them. Also make sure to tell me your favourite books of the year as I would love to know any recommendations to start my reading of 2018 off amazingly. I hope you have all had an incredible 2017, and here’s to an even better 2018. Thank you so much for all the love and support you have shown our blog this year. I hope you all have a very Happy New Year and we will be back with another post next year:)))) xxx
