2018 Reading Challenge / Recommendations!

Annike: Hey guys! Happy new year to all of you, I hope 2018 is the best year yet and thank you to all of you who continue to read and support our blog, we truly appreciate it. For the last several years I have been really keen to participate in Popsugar’s annual reading challenges which give prompts for 40 to 50 books to help you expand your reading scope.

Last year I tried the 2017 one and only ended up getting to about 27/40 and gave up around October or so. So this year I looked through the list and the advanced list (extra 10) and picked the 40 I thought I would be most likely to do – cutting down 10 that were unreasonable for some reason or another. Anyways, I wanted to show you the list below and ask you guys for your recommendations on what I could read for each of these options. I have given a little extra information for some of the categories that needed it and so here it is:

  1. A book made into a movie you’ve already seen
  2. True Crime
  3. The next book in a series you started
  4. A book involving a heist
  5. A novel based on a real person
  6. A book set in a country that fascinates you
  7. A book with a time of day in the title
  8. A book about a villain or antihero
  9. A book about death or grief
  10. A book with an LGBTQ+ protagonist
  11. A book that is also a stage play or musical
  12. A book by an author of a different ethnicity than you (I’m Australian/Caucasian)
  13. A book about feminism
  14. A book about mental health
  15. A book you borrowed or that was given to you as a gift
  16. A book by two authors
  17. A book about or involving sport
  18. A book by a local author (I live in Sydney)
  19. A book with your favourite colour in the title (Black or Yellow)
  20. A book with alliteration in the title
  21. A book about time travel
  22. A book with a weather element in the title
  23. A book set at sea
  24. A nook with an animal in the title
  25. A book set on a different planet
  26. A book with song lyrics in the title
  27. A book with characters who are twins
  28. A book mentioned in another book
  29. Childhood classic you’ve never read
  30. A book that’s published in 2018
  31. A past Goodreads Choice Awards winner
  32. A book set in the decade you were born (2000’s)
  33. A book you meant to read in 2017 but didn’t get to
  34. A book with an ugly cover
  35. Book that involves a bookstore or library
  36. A favourite prompt from the 2015, 2016 or 2017 Popsugar reading challenges (Probably from the 2016 one – a book you can finish in a day)
  37. A book that was being read by a stranger in a public place
  38. A book with a fruit or vegetable in the title
  39. A book about a problem facing society today
  40. A best seller from the year you graduated high school (I haven’t graduated high school yet so I decided primary school would do which is 2013)

Anyways, so that is all of them. I would really appreciate it if you guys could give me some ideas on some of these prompts and your recommendations because sometimes I don’t even know where to start! Also, I would definitely recommend this list or just any reading challenge to all of you because it is always great to get outside of your comfort zone with reading and push yourself to read more or differently. Happy New Year guys, thanks for another amazing year!

We will be back with our first proper post of 2018 in a couple of days.
