October Wrap-Up ~ 2017

Annike: Hey guys, so we are here today to do our monthly wrap-up post for October. As a preface – I haven’t had a very good October at all. In fact I hardly read any books again and seem to have gone into a slump so sorry about the lack of reading thats been going on haha 🙂 Hopefully I can get into it again after this term ends which as a warning might mean a slow November!

Annike’s Books

  1. The Pipers Son by Melina Marchetta – 4.5 stars
  2. The Handmaids Tale by Margaret Atwood – 3 stars
  3. What I Saw by Beck Nichols – 3 stars
  4. More Than This by Patrick Ness – 2 stars

Favourite Book: So this month my favourite book was definitely The Piper’s Son. It was like a spin off book from Saving Francesca which I read and loved last month. I did a mini review so definitely check it out above but it was such a great read with so many relatable, amazing characters.

Least Favourite Book: I think my least favourite book of the month was More Than This by Patrick Ness. I read a couple of his books last month and found this one as an audiobook. I thought the premise was just so weird and confusing. But thinking about it now – it wasn’t too bad and was quite interesting at some points just not overly so.

Favourite Cover: My favourite cover of the month would have to be What I Saw by Beck Nicholas. I’m not sure its one of my all time favourites but definitely of this month. The book was also pretty good – it was quite an easy read but had some really important issues and messages in it like King Hit’s which was very interesting. I will definitely release a post on this at some point too.

Biggest Disappointment: If I’m being totally honest I’ll have to say that The Handmaid’s Tale was my biggest disappointment for the month. Not that it was bad – I was just expecting something greater and I found it very slow.

Zoe’s Books

  1. The Great Gatsby by F.Scott Fitzgerald (3.5 stars)
  2. A Quiet Kind of Thunder by Sara Barnard (3 stars)
  3. Four Weeks, Five People by Jennifer Yu (3 stars)
  4. The Sandcastle Empire by Kayla Olson (2.5 stars)
  5. By Your Side by Kasie West (2.5 stars)
  6. The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood (3 stars)

Favourite Book: From my star ratings you can probably yell that I didn’t have a very good month in terms of the books I read. I found them all interesting but wasn’t able to find any that I really loved. I would probably have to say my favourite was The Great Gatsby by F.Scott Fitzgerald because I thought the writing was really good.
Least Favourite Book: This one would definitely be The Sandcastle Empire by Kayla Olson. A librarian recommended I give this book a go because she loved the idea of the premise but I found it really weird. It was a science fiction story but I wasn’t able to connect with any of the characters and found the plot hard to follow and confusing.
Favourite Ending: I would say The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood because I thought is was a really unique was to end the story and although it didn’t come to a close I thought it worked well in the context of the story and liked how it could be carried on by the reader’s imagination and perspective.
Favourite Cover: My absolute favourite cover would have to be Four Weeks, Five People by Jennifer You. I think the cover is SO pretty and it was one of the main reasons I actually picked up the book. I will be posting a review on this book very soon so if you want to know more about it, keep an eye out:)
Biggest Disappointment: Definitely By Your Side by Kasie West. I usually love Kasie West books but I found this was really underwhelming. This book took me around 5 months to actually finish because I kept not wanting to read it and then picking it back up later. I thought it got slightly better near the end but really didn’t love it.
Favourite Premise: A Quiet Kind of Thunder by Sara Barnard would fit this category the best because it sounded like such a cute love story. I actually did enjoy it and found it cute but it wasn’t a very memorable book, more something that was a fun, quick read.
Zoe: Thank you all so much for reading! We hope you have all had a lovely October and have a very happy Halloween! If you have read any of the books we mentioned above make sure to share your thoughts with us in the comments below. Thanks again, we will be back with a TBR for November very soon! x
